Second Bhairab railway bridge over the Meghna River is expected to be opened in April next to lessen travel time between Dhaka and Chittagong, reports BSS.
"The 982.20 meter railway bridge over the Meghna River will ease rail communication between Dhaka and Chittagong," Railways Minister M Mazibul Haque told BSS yesterday.
He said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working sincerely to improve service of the Bangladesh Railway (BR).
"The government has undertaken various steps for modernization of railway giving priority to ensure easy transportation for the people in the country. We have already implemented many development projects," the minister said.
According to a railway ministry official, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would inaugurate the Second Bhairab railway bridge in April.
The Bangladesh Railway signed an agreement with IRCON International and AFCONS Infrastructure Ltd to construct the Second Bhairab railway bridge on September 10, 2013.
It said the total cost for the 2nd Bhairab railway bridge would be over Tk 5.67 billion. The 982.20-metre double-track bridge will be considered as an important link between Dhaka and Chittagong rail route. The Bhairab railway bridge will connect Ashuganj under Brahmanbaria.
