Gulshan attack plotter Marzan, aide killed in spl police drive

Two top militants of the Neo-JMB, one of them a mastermind of the Gulshan café attack, Nurul Islam, alias Marzan, were killed in a special drive conducted by the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crimes (CTTC) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police in the city’s Mohammadpur area early yesterday.
Talking to The Independent, Md Yususf Ali, additional deputy commissioner (media wing) of the DMP, said a heavy gunfight took place during the special anti-militant drive in Beribadh, in which Marzan and his accomplice were killed. A  firearm and a motorcycle were seized from the spot.
The accomplice was  identified as Saddam Hossain. According to Bachchu Mia, in charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, the bodies were brought to the hospital around 3:30am and kept in the morgue. Monirul Islam, chief of the CTTC unit, said Marzan was one of the suspected masterminds of the recent extremist attacks in the country and his name surfaced during the investigation into the Holey Artisan Bakery attack in the city. Saddam was a chargesheeted accused in the killing case of Japanese citizen Hoshi Kunio, case of attempt to murder of Bahai community leader in Rangpur, murder case of Debiganj Hindu priest Jogeshwar Roy and other criminal cases.
Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said the slain Saddam Hossain, alias Rahul, alias Sabuj, alias Chanchal, alias Robi led the attacks in the northern part of the country. The minister made the statement at a press briefing at his Dhanmondi residence around 11am yesterday (Friday).
Kamal said the detectives had been searching for the two militants for a long time. “It’s not just Marzan or Saddam, we’ll not spare any militant,” he added.
Describing the incident, the minister said Marzan and Saddam threw bombs at members of the CTTC when they told the militants to stop their motorcycle. In retaliation, law enforcers fired back, which left the two fatally wounded. Saddam was an accused in at least 10 murder cases, including the killing of Japanese citizen Hoshi Kunio in Rangpur. The minister said the Neo-JMB’s strength had been weakened by the death of Marzan and Saddam. “We’ll also arrest Musa and Maj (sacked) Zia,” he vowed.
