Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has cancelled 30 internet service provider (ISP) licences, including seven nationwide permits as the companies did not apply for renewal after their authorisations expired.
According to the Telecommunication Act 2001 (Amendment 2010) it is a punishable offence with the provision of three years of jail or Tk 200 crore fine to provide telecom and internet service without a permit.
MA Taleb, director (Licencing), BTRC said ISP firms can apply for renewal before their permit expires.
“As these 30 firms did not seek renewal even after their permit expired, we have cancelled their licences,” the BTRC director said.
The Regulatory Commission has issued an urgent notice yesterday asking the firms to stop providing services and clear the dues within ten days.
Or, according to Public Demands Recovery Act 1913, necessary steps, including filing cases will be taken against the 30 ISP companies, the BTRC notice read.
Nextel Telecom Limited, Poly IT Limited, Global Access Limited, B J International Co (Pvt) Limited, Flora Limited, CPM Blue Online (Pvt) Limited, Ektoo Limited—are the nationwide internet service providers who have lost their permits.
Among the Central Zone internet service providers—Global Technology Ltd, G-Net Technology, Axis Technology, Sigma Systems Pvt Ltd, Web Internet, I-NET, Ganibangla Electronics & Computers Ltd, MG Electronics, Zia Online, T-Network, Triunetech, Smart Systems & Consultants Ltd, MaccaMadina Traders, Hazari Business Center, E-Net, Sytel IT, Western Communication, IT Sources—are the companies who have lost licences.
And, South-East Zone internet service providers—SA Telecom System Limited, BeaConnet Online, Zero 4 Network—also lost licences. While, in the North-West Zone, Karatoa Online Limited and SAS Technology have also lost permits.
