RAJSHAHI: Funds crunch has affected the upgradation of the premier, multidisciplinary Central Science Laboratory (CSL) in Rajshahi University. “We are unable to further modernise the CSL and improve its facilities due to budget deficit. We would be able to do so if we manage to get more funds from the UGC and the government,” RU vice-chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin said. Set up in 1997, the CSL has enhanced pure science-based higher research. It offers centralised facilities and equipment to teachers and students of several faculties and departments including engineering, science and agriculture. Initially, the laboratory did not have its own building, and its instruments were accommodated in different departments and faculties. It was later housed in the varsity’s first science building that came up in 2005, establishing the concept of centralised laboratory services.
Besides RU, the CSL also provides different technical support and access to equipment to other universities, local research-based organisations and industries in the northern part of the country. The laboratory has helped develop new technologies that have received both domestic and international recognition. A CSL official said that the laboratory provides several scientific services and equipment for research including the FTIR spectrophotometer, UV-visible spectrophotometer, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, fluorescence spectrophotometer, impedance analyser, protein sequencer, high-performance liquid chromatography, EEG, cooling incubator and ultra-cooling centrifuge machine.
