SAVAR: A daylong Bird Fair-2017 was held on Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus in Savar yesterday. A large number of visitors with their family and relatives thronged here to witness the fair of migratory birds at the outskirts of capital Dhaka. University Treasurer Dr Abul Khair inaugurated the event as chief guest at Zahir Raihan Auditorium premises about 9.30am, while chairman of JU Zoology department Dr Monwar Hossain Tuhin was in the chair.
Conducted by the professor of JU History department ATM Atikur Rahman, prominent ornithologist Dr Enam Al Haque, officials of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) attended as special guests. Dr Abul Khair said, “Birds and others wild animals has indispensible role in ecosystem of environment as they protect the ecological balance.
So, we should have protect birds as well as others wild animals.’ After the inaugural session, different types of event such as inter university bird identification competition, stall decoration competition, debate competition, bird painting competition for children, watching migratory birds in different spot by telescope for children, quiz competition, discussion and a cultural session relating to birds held on the day long fair. The visitors also were taken part in their related events in the fair. Mesbahur Rahman, a government official who came to enjoy this fair, said, “This is the first time, I am came to enjoy Bird Fair. I am very happy to be here”. He expected that JU authority will continue such type of fair in future.
Meanwhile, the university authorities have taken different initiatives to insure the safety of visitors. Moreover, they are always prepared to take measure to keep the campus net and clean, an officials of of the organizing committee said. Mentionable, JU Zoology department in collaboration with Wild Life Rescue Center, Bangladesh Bird Club and Aronnok Foundation organised this fair since 2002 with a view to raising mass awareness about preserving birds.
