Prime Bank Young Tigers National School Tournament for the 2016-17 season rolled onto the ground at seventy different venues across the country yesterday.
A total of 10,800 budding cricketers from 540 schools are taking part in the 901-match district round of the tournament.
Of them, the highest number of 124 schools from Dhaka, 88 from Chittagong, 80 from Khulna, 40 from Barisal, 32 of Dhaka Metro, 36 of Sylhet and 68 each from Rajshahi and Rangpur will participate in the 965-match meet.
Each district champion will progress to the second round, the divisional round, which will be commenced from the first week of February.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director and its game development committee chairman Khaled Mahmud Sujon revealed this at a press conference at the Media Block of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) on Thursday.
“School cricket keeps a vital role to make the enriched pipeline of the country’s cricket. The bulk of the players of the current age group teams are being emerged from the school cricket.
A total of 16 players of the present U-15 and 17 players of the U-17 have been come out from the last year tournament,” said Khaled Mahmud.
Ahmed Kamal Khan Chowdhury, managing director of Prime Bank Limited and Mohammad Moniruzzaman, vice president and head of corporate and public affairs relationship division were also present.
“BCB will send a team to India to play Mumbai World School Championship in 2017. The team will be formed by the selected players from the last
year’s school tournament. Prime Bank will sponsor for the team,” said Ahmed Kamal.
Kamal later handed over a cheque for Taka one crore to Khaled Mahmud to run the tournament. Prime Bank will also sponsor of the School Cricket for the next four years.
