On December 29, 2016 the Beipan River Bridge, the world’s highest, officially opened to traffic. The bridge is part of Hangzhou-Ruili Expressway, and provides another outlet connecting Yunnan province with its north-eastern neighbour, Guizhou, as well as other areas.
The bridge crosses the Beipan River, which demarcates the border between Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. The main span is 720 metres and the bridge decks its 565 metres – or almost the equivalent of a 200-storey building -- from the water. With the completion of Beipan River Bridge, the Hangzhou-Ruili Expressway, which runs through Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan Guizhou and Yunnan provinces, will soon be fully open to traffic.
