A ground-breaking ceremony for the China-Laos railway was held in Luang Prabang, Laos, on December 25, 2016.
The China-Laos railway is an important part of the Trans-Asian railway, and will extend from the Mohan-Boten border crossing between China and Laos in the north, and stretch to Vientiane in the south. The railway will cover a total length of more than 400 kilometres, of which, 62.7 percent will be bridges and tunnels. The design speed is 160 kilometres per hour and the entire line will span 32 stations. Construction is expected to be completed in five years. The China-Laos railway is the first overseas railway project with China as the main investor and joint operator. It will connect directly with China’s existing railway network, with the entire line adopting Chinese technical standards and utilising Chinese equipment.
