After taking the charge of national cricket team as the head coach, Chandika Hathurusingha helped Bangladesh make a meteoric surge in the world cricket as the team seemed to have groomed well under his shrewd guidance. But the current state of the team left the coach in jeopardized condition with rumours rife about his autocratic nature which many believed contributed in Bangladesh’s recent downfall in New Zealand.
The team looked jaded and out-of-sort in the tour but their habit of losing the wickets in a cluster after a good partnership actually began during the ODI series against Afghanistan in the last year. Bangladesh is yet to recover from that and Hathurusingha is held responsible for that because of his excess experiment.
But the coach got a good support from the top official of Bangladesh cricket. Few days after the BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon praised his work ethics, director Khaled Mahmud Sujon also raised vocal for him, stating that everybody should refrain from criticising the coach needlessly.
Mahmud this time though did not tour to New Zealand with the team, he had experienced to work with Chandika as the team manager.
“Normally we don’t get quality coach. We have seen some renowned coaches, whose names were in the world cricket. But we didn’t get any success from them. Hathurusingha brought up successes for us,” said Khaled Mahmud.
“We have to keep in mind that he played a vital role behind the success of Bangladesh. Of course, players had also an important role behind it. For their performance Bangladesh won the games but Hathurusingha provided the confidence amongst them,” he added.
Since taking the charge of the team, Bangladesh played the quarterfinal in the 2015 World Cup under his guidance. They won five straight bilateral series including the giants like India, Pakistan and South Africa. Last year Bangladesh played Asia Cup T20 final ahead of the ICC World T20. They showcased the outstanding performance to bring up a famous Test victory against the top-ranked England in Test. Most of the successes came at home den. While there was high expectation that Bangladesh would thrive in overseas condition, Bangladesh so far miserably failed in New Zealand tour.
But Mahmud credited Hathurusingha to make the team a ‘Team Bangladesh.’
“It is difficult to form a good team. There are many more quality players in a team. But he made the team as a good team. We all called it as ‘Team Bangladesh’,” he added.
Former skipper urges all to set aside the criticism and said that they all should support Bangladesh in their bad day as a genuine supporter.
“Chandika knows well what his actual works are. We have a habit by nature that when we do well we don’t talk about it but when we lose then we drag the team down,” he said, adding “If we are true supporters of Bangladesh team, if we could support Bangladesh cricket, we should stay beside Bangladesh team in its worst time.”
He also said that they should drop the matter to select the playing XI on selectors and team management.
“I told from my limited knowledge that we should not analysis the team and its performance negatively on the cusp of the awful period. It should be discussed positively. We should let the matter on team management for selecting the squad,” he said.
Mahmud was also disappointed by the former cricketers’ harsh criticism towards Hathurusingha and said that he is a quality coach and knows his own works how to bring success.
“I am disappointed to hear the criticism from the former cricketers. They are talking about Hathurusingha. They are raising question about the quality of Chandika. Actually they are talking foolish talks,” he said.
“Chandika is a quality coach. He knows well what he does. His planning is also very good. We should drop the matter on team management. It’s duty for all. We should not think much about it. Criticism will be everywhere. But we should criticise positively,” he opined.
