State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haq Chunnu yesterday urged the people to be united for realising the rights of the domestic helpers.
“Domestic helpers are passing their livelihood amid various repression and negligence...repression of the domestic helpers now has been spreading as a ‘social injury’ so people should be united against this,” the state minister said while addressing as the chief guest at the inaugural function of a month-long programme at Jatiya Press Club (JPC) here.
A network on establishing domestic rights organised the programme celebrating the anniversary of “Domestichelp Protection and Welfare Policy-2015”.
Terming the policy as a “landmark”, Chunnu said the policy is a primary stage for formulating a full-fledged act by the present government as it would ensure protection and welfare of the domestic helpers.
Chaired by Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS) Chairman Habibur Rahman Siraj, the inaugural session
was also attended, among others, by leaders of the National Trade Union Federation, representatives of the human rights organisations including Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Labour and Employment Ministry Israfil Alam and Dr Wazedul Islam Khan.
Later, a colourful rally was brought out from the National Press Club and paraded different city thoroughfares.
Around 200 domestic helpers from city’s different areas participated at the function.
