A housewife was beaten to death allegedly by her husband over dowry at Dewantuli village in the city on Tuesday, reportsUNB.
The deceased was identified as Rokshana Akhtar Irin, 21, wife of Sharif Miah of the village.
Family sources said Sharif Miah, son of late Shahajan Miah, married Irin, daughter of late Abul Hossain of Kashaituli village in the city, three years back.
Quoting locals, police said Sharif used to torture Irin to bring Tk 50,000 as dowry from her parents.
Sharif engaged in a brawl with Irin over the issue in the early hours of Tuesday and at one stage, he beat Irin with a stick mercilessly, leaving her dead on the spot.
Later, he hanged the body from the ceiling of their house to make it appear that she committed suicide.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, said sub-inspector Shah Alam, in-charge of Mahigonj police outpost.
However, Sharif and his family members went into hiding after the incident.
