Some 17.5 lakh students of Barisal district at primary and secondary levels, including those in Barisal city, will receive free books today, New Year’s Day.

The National Curriculum Textbook Board (NCTB) has already distributed these books at the school level. District primary and secondary education offices have also distributed these books to schools, madrasas and vocational institutes from the city to the villages.
Sources in the office of the deputy director (DD) of primary and secondary education (Barisal) said the demand on the part of schools and madrasas comprised 5,911,157 copies in 10,572 primary-level schools of Barisal division. The divisional directorate office at the secondary level has received 97 per cent of books of the secondary and madrasa levels and 98 per cent of the primary level till December 30.
The rest of the books is on their way to Barisal and would be supplied within the deadline to the schools.
Sources said the book distribution ceremony would be organised at the auditorium of the century-old Sister’s Day Primary School this morning and the Government Sadar Girls’ and Government Zilla School.
A source said the department has been monitoring the work of book distribution from the beginning.
He said almost all the students would get the new books within the deadline. On visiting different schools of the city, it was found that the school authorities have already supplied the books to the class teachers, who have stored them to ensure speedy distribution among the students on time. The school authorities have also chalked out programmes and functions for distributing the books.
However, some high schools of the city have not got all their books yet. Halima Khatun Girls' High School headmaster SM Fakruzaman said Bangla, English, and some Arts and Commerce books had not reached the school till 1pm on Saturday.
Regional DD (secondary schools) of Barisal, D. Mustafizur Rahman, said in reply to a query that the department was prioritising the coastal belt. The city’s schools would receive the books soon.
