Work underway to reopen Shaymoli Shishu Park

Shehab Ahmed

In a development that is surely to ring in New Year cheer for city kids and their parents, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is going ahead with its plan to reopen Shaymoli Shishu Park.
DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq has already ordered formation of a committe of Councillors to chart out the parks reopenining, working out terms and conditions for its lease that the DNCC officials  said that may not take long.
The children’s park was closed on November 25 after the DNCC cancelled the operator’s lease for non-payment of dues.
The decision to close the city’s only remaining park for children had especially affected kids from lower income groups residing in the area.
However, DNCC mayor Annisul Huq had promised to reopen the park in a week’s time. But that was over a month ago.
DNCC chief executive officer (CEO) Mesbahul Islam told The Independent, "we are working on a detailed project plan for improving and beautifying the other parks at Gulshan, Banani, Farm Gate and Mohammadpur, besides opening the Shyamoli Shishu Park” . Similarly, work is underway to reopen Wonderland Children Park, which too was shut for a long time following legal wrangles with the lessee. The other parks, especially the ones at Mohammadpur and Farm Gate, are in shambles, with encroachment by vendors, ruffians and builders. Another problem plaguing the parks in the city is that they are being used as garbage dumps by residents. Some of them have turned into parking lots for trucks or used for stacking rods, bricks and other building materials, aggravating the sorry state of affairs.
One of the little strips near Bangabazar is now used by horse cart owners to graze their horses and is a favoured den for ruffians and criminals. The situation is similar at the city’s main parks—Ramna, Suhrawarddy Uddyan and Osmani Uddyan. They are now virtually under the control of beggars and criminals, who prey on visitors and rob those coming for a morning or evening stroll. The worst affected are students from Dhaka University and young couples from neighbouring areas.
However, Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Saeed Khokan recently announced plans to clean up the mess in and around the parks to transform them into “oases” amidst the concrete jungle so that people could visit them for some solitude among greenery, exercise or play.
