Third HSC merit list out

GPA-5 fails to work for 328 students

HARUN UR RASHID

A total of 328 admission seekers with Grade Point Average (GPA)-5 failed to make it to any of the colleges for higher secondary level in the third merit list published yesterday.
Besides, over one lakh applicants from the third merit list are yet to apply for admission. These students include those who were left out in the first and second merit lists.
As per the third merit list, a total of 1,08,639 admission seekers out of 1,09,146 valid applications were listed for the third time for admission in higher secondary education in different colleges.
The remaining 507 admission seekers in the third merit list have not found luck with any college. Of the 507 students, as many as 328 applicants had scored GPA-5.
Prof Abu Bakkar Siddique, Chairman of the Dhaka Education Board, while talking to The Independent, said, “These 507 students were highly ambitious about getting admission in top-ranking colleges, including the 328 students with GPA-5.”
“They were assured as they have GPA-5, but they probably did not think that their marks in individual subjects may not fulfil the criteria of the top-ranking colleges,” he added.
The result of the third merit list has been published in http://www.xiclassadmission.gov.bd.
Education Board sources said the students who came out successful in the third merit list will get time for admission to colleges till July 12 without any late fee.
According to the Board statistics, a total of 11,56,224 valid admission seekers applied for admission this year through mobile SMS and online for the first time.
In all, 9,46,771 students out of the first valid applications have been admitted to different colleges from the first and the second merit list so far. A total of 1,08,639 students came from the third list.
“There were over two lakh valid admission seekers remaining and we hoped that they will apply for the third time, but only 1,09,146  students applied. As a result 1,00,814 valid applicants, who applied in the first admission list, refrained from admission even the third time,” the Chairman said.
Professor Abu Bakkar further said, “Generally, we see that one to two-and-a-half lakh students do not take admission to higher secondary level after passing the secondary education. As a result, around two lakh students will remain without admission to any college.”
A total of 12,82,618 students under the 10 education boards passed this year, but 1,26,394 students did not apply to any college during the online admission.
The Board sources said that the new students, including those who did not take admission or did not get chance, will get the opportunity for the fourth time to apply for admission.
Their application process will begin between July 13 and July 21 based on the number of vacant seats.
Their results will be published on July 23 and admission will continue through July 25 and July 26, the sources said.
Professor Siddique said, “We have around 17 lakh seats for higher secondary level. But there are colleges that are not getting students, as many students are over ambitious to take admission in only top-ranking colleges.”
“As there is no chance of result manipulation, I would advise the students to apply for other colleges as well,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry sources said that the students, who do not take admission to higher secondary level due to poverty, will get financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s Education Assistance Trust.
The government will complete the admission process for higher secondary level through a four-phase exercise.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka Education Board circular has said that the migrated students, who did avail of admission to the new colleges, will remain in the previous colleges.
