President Abdul Hamid yesterday said he is hopeful about the formation of a skilled, neutral and acceptable Election Commission based on opinions from political parties, reports UNB.
“You (audience) know the tenure of the present Election Commission will expire soon. I’ve started discussion with different political parties with a view to forming a new Election Commission,” he said while inaugurating the newly constructed building of the EC at Agargaon in the capital.
Political parties are presenting their proposals and opinions, said the President adding, “I’m optimistic that it will be possible to form a skilled, neutral and acceptable Election Commission based on those opinions and discussion with the political parties.”
President Hamid initiated the formal talks with political parties about the EC formation with holding discussions with BNP on December 18. He also held a meeting with Jatiya Party, LDP, JSD, Krishak Sramik Janata League, Workers Party, Bangladesh Nationalist Front and Islami Oikya Jote.
The main attraction of democracy is election, said the President adding only election is not enough for practicing and flourishing democracy. “Political and administrative transparency and accountability are needed to give democracy a firm footing.”
“The participation of political parties that conduct activities democratically in election is the main precondition of a real democratic election. I hope that discipline in the activities of the political parties would play an important role in flourishing democracy in the country,” the President added.
He said the recently concluded Narayanganj City Corporation election has drawn the attention of the countrymen as it has been held peacefully with cooperation from all quarters. “I think, this election will be considered as a model for any election in future.”
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, Election Commissioner Abdul Mobarak and Project Director of Election Resource Center SM Ashfaque Hussain also spoke on the occasion.
