The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) may go in for a new course of action if it is denied permission to hold rallies and processions in the country to mark the third anniversary of the January 5, 2014 general elections, said party leaders.
The party believes that good sense would prevail in the government and it would permit the BNP to hold rallies and processions peacefully. Otherwise, the party would decide its next course of action, the leaders hinted.
The party is making all-out preparations to make the January 5 programme a success. Necessary instructions have been given to district leaders, they said.
“We want to observe the day with peaceful programmes. But if we are prevented from carrying these out, we will take a new course of action to expose the government,” said a leader.
Standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain yesterday termed January 5 a “day of shame” for the country’s democracy, as the people could not exercise their rights.
Talking to reporters after placing a wreath at the tomb of late president Ziaur Rahman, he said if the government obstructs the BNP programme, the BNP will not be harmed, but the government’s image will be tarnished. “It will reveal the true face of the government,” he said.
Briefing reporters at the party central office, BNP senior joint secretary-general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi yesterday said they are making preparations in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country to hold the programme. “If the government has minimum respect for democracy, it will not try to block us,” he said.
Terming the January 5, 2014 polls a “one-sided” affair, the BNP leader said it was a shameful incident in the political history of the country.
Joint secretary-general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal said they are yet to get the permission. But he hoped that good sense would prevail and the government would give the permission.
