After 45 years of the country’s independence, the Election Commission Secretariat has got its own building to run activities, UNB reports.
President Abdul Hamid yesterday inaugurated the 11-storey Election Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon area.
However, it will take 2-3 months more to shift the EC Secretariat to the newly constructed structure as its some works, including interior design, still remain incomplete, said Director (PR) at the EC Secretariat SM Asaduzzaman.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad also spoke at the inaugural ceremony held at the auditorium of newly constructed building while Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was present.
The EC Secretariat has been running its activities from buildings (blocks-5 and 6) of the Planning Commission in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area since 1973.
Before the Liberation War, the office of the central election commissioner was in Islamabad and the office of East Pakistan provincial election commission was at Momenbagh of Dhaka city.
The provincial EC office was shifted to the Secretariat after it came under bomb attack by freedom fighters in May-June in 1971 which killed a night guard.
