Naypyidaw has not yet made any official contact with Dhaka with regard to taking back 2,415 Myanmar nationals, commonly known as Rohingyas, from Bangladesh.
Quoting a senior official of the Myanmar foreign ministry, Reuters ran a report on Friday that the country, formerly known as Burma, plans to take back 2,415 of its citizen from Bangladesh in 2017.
“We have not yet received any official communication from the Myanmar side in this regard,” a senior foreign ministry official told The Independent yesterday when his attention was drawn to the report.
Despite repeated attempts, Bangladesh Ambassador to Myanmar Sufiur Rahman could not be reached for his comments in this regard.
The senior official, who requested anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media, toldthis correspondent, “These individuals were cleared as Myanmar nationals in 2016. And, they are among over 32,000 registered refugees living in two camps in Cox’s Bazar.”
When asked if Myanmar is serious about it, he said, “It is difficult to say. And, even if Myanmar wants to take them, will they want to go to their homes voluntarily given the horrible situation prevailing in the Rakhine state after the military crackdown on the Rohingyas after October 9?”
“Let’s see what happens in the coming days,” he added.
Myanmar forces along with local Buddhists launched a crackdown on Rakhine’s Muslim populace, commonly known as Rohingyas, after the killing of nine Myanmar border guard police personnel on October 9 allegedly by Rohingya extremists.
In spite of all-out efforts by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Coast Guard, about 50,000 Rohingyas crossed into Bangladesh to escape the atrocities orchestrated by the Myanmar forces and local Buddhist population.
This figure is in addition to 3-5 lakh Rohingyas already living in Bangladesh creating various socioeconomic problems.
Myanmar does not recognise the Muslim populace in Rakhine, who identify themselves as Rohingyas as their citizens.
The Myanmar ambassador to Dhaka was summoned twice since the crackdown began to express Bangladesh’s deep concern about the new Rohingya influx.
After summoning the envoy On Thursday, Bangladesh demanded that Myanmar should take back all its nationals including about 50,000 new arrivals.
Dhaka also protested against the firing at a Bangladeshi fishing vessel by a Myanmar ship manned by armed people on December 27.
The firing seriously injured four Bangladesh nationals.
