Ruling Awami League lawmaker from Gaibandha-1 (Sundarganj) constituency, Manjurul Islam Liton, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Gaibandha yesterday.
MP Liton was shot in his own house in Shabaz village of Bamandanga by unidentified men who came to his house on a motorbike at around 5:45 pm. All three of the killers were wearing helmets, according to an eyewitness.
One of the three assailants waited on the motorbike outside the house while the other two went inside and opened fire on the lawmaker. At least three rounds of bullets were shot, said family sources. The killers then fled the scene on the motorbike, they said.
MP Liton was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he succumbed at about 7:30pm. Hospital sources said there were three bullet wounds in his body, one on his chest and two on his arm.
Officer In-charge of Sundarganj Police Station Atiur Rahman confirmed the death of the MP and said a police team was immediately sent to the spot. Shahidul Haque, Inspector General of Police (IGP) told the local media that the criminals responsible for this will be arrested shortly.
District AL secretary Abul Bashar Siddique said a total of three persons came in two bikes. All of them were wearing helmets. When asked whether he was killed because of any sort of intra-party feud, Siddique said there was no such feud in Gaibandha Awami League.
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police arrested three people in connection with the murder yesterday night. Besides, Liton's supporters torched a local dispensary. Security was beefed up at several points of the district. Meanwhile, strongly condemning the killing, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked the law enforcement agencies to bring the killers to book.
"When Bangladesh is advancing towards development, a vested quarter is making ill efforts to create an anarchic situation in the country to gain their interest ... they’ve chosen the path of killing and terrorism which won’t be tolerated in any way," she said in a condolence message. Sheikh Hasina said the vested quarter killed Liton following the path of their politics of killing.
The prime minister asked the authorities concerned to take legal actions against the killers of Liton by hunting them down. She also urged local people to have patience.
She prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family members.
President Abdul Hamid also expressed deep shock at the death of MP Liton. In a condolence message, the President prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Talking to The Independent, AL Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak said, “This murder is being conducted by Jamaat-Shibir activists who have long been plotting against the ruling AL.” As per the decision of the central committee of Awami League, Nanak and the Organizing Secretary Mozammel Haque started for Gaibandha to investigate the whole situation.
Mahbubul Alam Hanif, joint general secretary of Awami League, said this murder was conducted intentionally to put Awami League into peril. “From the party, we are taking this very seriously. The criminals will not be spared.”
AL MP Major (Retd) Rafiqul Islam, Bir Uttam said such killing of a ruling party lawmaker in the hand of unidentified miscreants is a matter of grave concern. “All MPs should be alerted by the incident. I hope immediate investigation will be conducted to bring the criminals under justice.”
Lawmaker Manjurul Islam Liton, who was born in 1968, became an MP for the first tine in January 5 election in 2014. He was also a former president of Gaibandha district Awami League.
Controversy arose in October, 2015 when he shot an eight-year-old boy in his area allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Police arrested him following the filing of cases. He was later released on bail.
The incident of shooting the boy triggered a furore in Liton’s constituency with residents
calling for the cancellation of his Parliament membership.
