There was nothing positive news for Bangladesh football in 2016 season in the international arena but a successful conclusion of domestic competitions and some success in the women’s age group football.
It was a nightmare for country’s football, as the national team did the worst in the country’s 45 years football history, which was the talk of the country in the football arena while the election of the Bangladesh Football Federation was also another notable event in football.
Bangladesh though started the year 2016 with some aspiration after a 4-2 win against Sri Lanka on January 8 in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup Football Tournament but could not taste even a single victory out of next 10 international appearances.
This season Bangladesh played their first international match in the Bangabandhu International Gold Cup tournament against Sri Lanka and won the match by 4-2, and that’s all the success in the international arena.
Bangladesh played a total of 11 international matches including Bangabandhu Cup, Asian Cup pre-qualifying, World Cup qualifying and FIFA international friendly matches in 2016 but could manage only one win, suffered defeat in seven matches and drew three.
The disaster of national team began with Jordan match in Amman in the World Cup qualifying match with a humiliating 0-8 defeat, then 0-5 to Tajikistan in Dushanbe, another embarrassing 0-5 defeat to Maldives in September in the international friendly, finally on October 10 in Thimpu, Bhutan, Bangladesh tasted an awful 5-1 defeat at the hands of Bhutan in Asian Cup play off away match following the 0-0 draw home match. In fact it jolted the whole soccer crazy nation. Nobody wants to believed it and our FIFA rankings went down to all time low almost 200.
Bangladesh also suffered two defeats in the SA Games, though they won the bronze but lost the last edition’s gold of the regional Games.
But there was some solace for Bangladesh football when the age group women’s football brought some happy news when the spirited girls emerged champions in the AFC Under-16 qualifying round and earned the right to play in the Asian final round.
However, the year 2016 was certainly not at all a good season for the BFF as they failed miserably to implement the development work for the game which they had promised to do in their election manifesto for second term. Mainly they failed to keep the continuity of divisional and district level football and also to create a pipeline of producing footballers for future.
In the last season, they had no specific program or any plan for the development of the country’s football but to start the next season to start from tomorrow, BFF announced a calendar on December 16. It hired a very expensive technical director from England some two months back in a bid to make a revolution in the age group from the grassroots. Ex-footballers and fans feel that the BFF organizers want to erase their all previous sins riding on the back of the English soccer expert. Many had the doubt that the BFF had already wasted almost a year of their third term without showing any positive result. Even it could not move an inch forward to establish the much wanted football academy.
Anyhow, we still hope the BFF would make its best effort to take all positive steps to regain some lost glory as soon as possible.
Although country’s football are in deep trouble, Dhaka Abahani proved their mettle and lifted the JB Bangladesh Premier Football League 2015-16 title in style after a few years’ breather. But their arch rivals and traditional powerhouse Mohammedan Sporting Club plunged into their historic low.
OTHER GAMES
Like football we are lagging far behind international level in all other games off course not cricket. Some scattered success by our women weightlifters and also female swimmers in SA Games in India. And as a team national hockey team became champions in AHF Cup to qualify for Asia Cup and at the fag end of the year, the volleyball team toppled four other teams to win the title of Bangabandhu Asia Men’s Senior Central Group Volleyball.
Even all other games not only failed to show their mettle in international level. but also the same saga in domestic scene. Although a few federations like Handball and Chess kept their domestic activities round the year to keep the game alive.
