A police sub-inspector was suspended yesterday over Friday’s deaths of 27 people in a stampede while collecting Zakat cloths in Mymensingh.
Saidul Islam, a town sub-inspector (TSI) of Mymensingh police outpost-2, was suspended for negligence in duty, said Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.
In a jostle for Zakat clothes distributed among the poor by the Nurani Jarda management, 23 women and four children got trampled to death in the district town early Friday.
Meanwhile, police yesterday produced Zakat donor Mohammad Shamim, who owns Nurani Jarda-- a chewing tobacco brand, his son and six staff, before the Cognisance Court-1 and sought a seven-day remand for each of them. Judge Ahsan Habib fixed Sunday (today) to hear the remand prayer and sent the eight, who were arrested soon after the incident, to jail. Earlier on Friday, a three-member probe body, headed by Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Shafiqul Islam. They were asked to submit their report within five working days.
Meanwhile, the probe body, headed by Additional District Magistrate Mallica Khatun, has already started its work.
Mollica said her team has talked to the family members of many victims and the people living adjacent to the spot.
“Primarily, we found lack of security measures to tackle the rush to be the main reason behind the stampede,” she said. “The local people also blamed the unwise decision of the Zakat donor,” Mallica added.
Demanding proper investigation into the incident, different socio-cultural and political organisations formed a human chain at Shaheed Firoz Jahangir Square in the town yesterday noon. They demanded punishment for the people responsible for the incident and compensations for the victims’ families.
