The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of the BNP, is going to observe its 38th founding anniversary tomorrow, two-and-a-half months after its executive committee ran out of its two-year tenure in October.
BNP founder Ziaur Rahman formed the JCD on January 1 in 1979.
The organisaiton with the largest ever central committee, which comprises 736 members and failed to hold a single meeting of their body, will organise a rally at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium tomorrow to mark the day. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will present at the rally, which is scheduled to begin at 2pm, as chief guest.
JCD leaders and activists expressed expectation that the former premier would give them a guideline on the formation of the next central committee and the next course of action.
“We want formation of the new central committee of the JCD as the two-year tenure of the incumbent committee expired on October 14,” said a joint secretary of the organisation.
He accused the present committee of failing to have a meeting of the central committee, placing wreath at the mazar of the late Ziaur Rahman and even of the failure to meet the party chairperson with the full-fledged committee.
The incumbent committee even failed to form all the 89 district committees across the country. The committee only formed 24 district committees according to the will of a few central leaders, the leader alleged.
Mehedy Hasan, president of JCD's Dhaka University unit, however, said that the central committee could not held any meeting as there was no congenial atmosphere to do it. “We should understand the background of the political arena. There was no situation to hold a meeting of the central committee,” he added.
He expressed optimism that the chairperson would give them a directive to remould the organisation.
Khaleda Zia approved the largest ever full-fledged central committee of the party’s associate student body on Saturday night, about 16 months after she had announced a 153-member partial central committee.
In October 2014, the BNP chairperson had approved a 153-member partial central committee of the JCD, with Rajib Ahsan as its president and Akramul Hasan as general secretary. It had that created huge resentment among the party rank and file. After 16 months, however, the chairperson expanded it to a 736-member committee to contain any possible rebellion within the party, satisfying all contenders.
The draft constitution of the JCD allows the formation of a 201-member central committee since 1979.
