The police department has proposed changing the collar patch (gorget), peaked cap, beret blue, belt and rank badges of the uniforms of some ranks of Bangladesh police to enhance their self-esteem.
The gorget collar patches will be changed for the ranks of inspector general of police (IGP) and additional IGP and the rank badges for the ranks of assistant superintendent of police (ASP), inspector, sergeant, town sub inspector (TSI), assistant sub inspector (ASI), havilder major and naik of the country’s main law enforcement agency.
Senior police officers said this move—to change their rank badge, gorget, cap and belt—would contribute to rejuvenating them and enhance their capacity to work.
Officers of the armed forces said the police could change their rank badges without following the design of the Bangladesh Army.
It is after some 175 years after the formation of the police force in the land that the police department is going to change rank insignia. At present, rank badges of police are designed like those of the Bangladesh Army, though the colour is different.
In order to change the rank insignia of the police department, the police headquarters has sent a proposal to the home ministry for taking necessary steps in this regard.
It has made a presentation to change the rank badges, collar patch (gorget), peaked cap, beret blue and belt of some ranks at a recent inter-ministerial meeting, held at the home ministry.
At the meeting, officials of the home ministry urged the officials concerned to solicit opinions from their organisations in this regard to take a decision on changing the rank badges, collar patch (gorget), peaked cap, beret blue and belt of some ranks of the police.
State minister for home affairs, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, told The Independent that members of the police force will feel more encouraged after the collar patch (gorget), peaked cap, beret blue, belt and rank badges of some ranks of the police department are changed.
“After their rank insignia are changed, it will also help enhance their self-esteem. It will also make them serve the people better,” he said.
Additional secretary (police) Akter Hossain Bhuiyan told The Independent that they would hold a meeting on changing the rank badges, collar patch (gorget), peaked cap, beret blue and belt of some ranks of the police soon.
“We can change the rank badges, collar patch (gorget), peaked cap, beret blue and belt of some ranks of police as their colour is not the same as that of the Bangladesh Army,” he explained.
According to the proposal, Bangladesh police want to change the collar patch (gorget) of the IGP to one similar to that of the Army personnel. The existing collar patch of the IGP has a silver oak leaf embroidery and a metallic button, silver in colour, having a Bangladesh Police monogram at its top end. They proposed a metallic button of silver colour, having the Bangladesh Police monogram at its top end, three stars (silver in colour and embroidered) in the middle part and ‘shapla’ (water lily) surrounded by wheat and paddy wreaths (silver in colour and embroidered) at the bottom end.
For the rank of additional IGP (grade 1), the police proposed to change the gorget to a metallic button of silver colour, with the Bangladesh Police monogram on its top end, and two stars (silver colour, embroidered) in the middle part and ‘shapla’ surrounded by wheat and paddy wreaths (silver colour, embroidered) at the bottom end.
The rank badge of ASP is proposed to have three four-pointed silver-coloured metal stars instead of the existing two four-pointed silver-coloured metal stars.
For the rank of inspector, the police headquarters proposed two four-pointed silver-coloured metal stars instead of a single pointed silver-coloured metal star. They also proposed to change the peak cap to one without a boat with sail. The existing peak cap has a boat with a sail surrounded by wheat and paddy wreaths. A ‘shapla’ is placed on the centre top of the sail. The word ‘police’ in Bengali is written below the boat. All this is in
silver embroidery. But, as the proposal says, “The cap badge will be a single ‘shapla’ with two jute leaves at the top, surrounded by wheat and paddy wreaths in silver embroidery.”
The police have also proposed changing the beret blue without a boat with sail. The existing beret blue has a boat with sail surrounded by wheat and paddy wreaths. A ‘shapla’ is placed on top of the sail. The word ‘police’ in Bengali is written below the boat. This is treated as the police monogram. The police have proposed that “the cap badge will be a single ‘shapla’ with two jute leaves at the top, surrounded by wheat and paddy wreaths in silver embroidery.”
They want to change the belt, too. Instead of the existing web belt, black in colour with Velcro system without eyelets, the police have proposed a black leather belt with adjustable buckle, having the monogram of the cap badge of the respective ranks. An appropriate web belt of 3 x 1 inches may also be used.
The police have proposed to change the rank badges of sergeant and town sub-inspector. They have proposed a single four-pointed silver-coloured metal star instead of the existing two four-pointed (cross) metal flowers of silver colour with a red ribbon of half-inch width on the base of the shoulder plate above the shoulder, with the letters “police” written in Bengali. They want to change the peaked cap. They have proposed a plain or leather peak cap, instead of plain patent khaki cloth peak cap. They want change the beret blue for the ranks.
The police have proposed to change the rank badge of the assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and the assistant town sub¬-inspector (ATSI). They have proposed two four-pointed (cross) metal flowers of silver colour and a dark blue ribbon of half-inch width on the base of the shoulder plate, above the letters “police” in Bengali on the shoulder. The existing one has a single four-pointed (cross) metal flower of silver colour. A dark blue ribbon, half-inch in width, is placed on the base of the shoulder plate above the letters “police” in Bengali on the shoulder.
The police have proposed changing the rank insignia of havilders major. They have proposed two four-pointed (cross) metal flowers of silver colour and a dark blue ribbon of half-inch width on the base of the shoulder plate above the letters “police” in Bengali on the shoulder. The havilder major will wear an additional metal ‘shapla’ of silver colour on the left forearm just above the wrist. The existing one has a single four-pointed (cross) metal flower of silver colour with a dark blue ribbon of half-inch width on the base of the shoulder plate above the letters “police” in Bengali on the shoulder. The havilder major will wear a cloth ‘shapla’ (silver embroidered on a red background) on the left forearm instead of a chevron just above the wrist. Battalion havilders major will wear metal ‘shapla’ of silver colour.
