Awami League backed candidate Advocate Safia Khanam won the Zila Parishads (district councils) polls as chairman in Rangpur. Sources said Safia joined Awami League in 1976. Then she served as secretary of Bangladesh Mahila Awami League. In the mean time, she joined in a non-government office (NGO). After retirement she became the district leader of Mahila Awami League. In an interview she told the Independent that she is grateful to the prime minister. She is also grateful to people who cast their vote in favour of her, she added. Safia said she is committed to fullfill people’s demand. She wants help of all walks of people.
