Every year end, we tend to review everything we did throughout the year and make plans to be more productive in the upcoming one. We plan on improving our physical well-being, eat healthier, exercise more, quit smoking, get rid of bad habits like nail biting, learn a new skill, visit new places or do more for others. We teach our children to make creative resolutions so that they have a fruitful year ahead of them.
This tradition was once mostly followed in the West, but it is increasingly gaining popularity in the East, too. The tradition of making resolutions stretches back to as early as Babylonian times, when people would make promises to their gods at the start of each year to return borrowed objects and repay their debts, whereas the Romans started each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named.
We all have our unique way of starting a New Year, and The Weekend magazine caught up with some people we interviewed in 2016 to learn about their New Year’s resolution. Here is a glimpse of their hopes and thoughts for the New Year 2017:
M A Mohit, President, BMTC (Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club)
I want to go to the North Pole this time. There is another plan to go for a joint expedition with mountaineers of Bengal _ Bangladesh and Kolkata; this will be a big event of the year. We still haven’t decided on the location. This year, we have sent five female members of our club for mountaineering training and in 2017, we will be sending them on expeditions. For new members, we will be arranging several expeditions and an array of activities.
Md Dulal Sarkar, Assistant Professor, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University
It is another chance for me to flourish as a teacher and researcher for doing new innovative work in the agriculture sector. I will try to make a genuine and dedicated effort in research with moral and ethics.
Ulfath Quader, Owner, Swiss Bakery
I think I will dedicate 2017 to humanitarian causes. I will be travelling to Nepal , I went there with a team to help out when the devastating earthquake struck, there is still a lot left to do there. And I have plans to travel extensively as I believe travel promotes productivity.
Tania Nusrat Zaman, Head of Child Rights and Protection, Plan International
I continue to be amazed by the youth of Bangladesh and the world. They give us hope and show the path forward. I am proud to partner with my young colleagues.
Saadman Salahuddin, Assistant Manager, Marketing Communications, The Westin Dhaka
My new year’s resolution is to have the right balance between work and life. I want to manage my work and life more efficiently so that I can enjoy every bit of it.
Mehruba Reza, Senior Assistant Vice President, Brac Bank
I will work towards improving myself, and work on emotional intelligence (EQ) as it plays a key role when it comes to happiness and success in our relationships, career and personal goals. I also have plans to take self defence classes, that will help me feel more confident about myself, and I personally think all women should know some self defence techniques. I also want to learn how to ride a bicycle.
Sarah Zaheen, Care Evangelist, Jeeon
I am on a journey of self- awareness and self-reflection. My new year’s resolution is to know myself more, to love myself more and to embrace myself and be comfortable with that. I want to practice self-healing and focus on healing others.
Masha Sarah Huq, Grad Student, Georgia State University
2016 was very eventful and I took some major life-changing decisions, which would definitely create an impact in 2017. Moving to the USA at this time is quite difficult, although I moved as a student; I worry about the state foreigners are in at present. I will keep calm and focus on my studies and hope Trump’s America will let me survive.
Ta-Seen Anannya, Office Manager, Centre for Health Population and Development, Independent University, Bangladesh
As an office manager, I want to organise some praiseworthy seminars and redesign the website of the centre. On the other hand, I want to arrange workshops for members of my Facebook-based group ‘Pregnancy, birth and motherhood BD’. Every day, I realise that life is capable of throwing surprises your way and it is up to you to make it work to your advantage. 2016 has been a tough year, but the lessons I have learned will help me map out 2017 more efficiently. Being a mother of two is not an easy task, and I hope the decisions I make will be beneficial for my children. I have also promised myself to eat healthy and think positive thoughts.
Rubayat Khan, Teambuilder, Jeeon
In 2017, I plan to become more focussed. In the past few years, I have become more and more thinly spread out, and that has meant that I often lost perspective on what is most important at any given point in time. I want to be mindful of the present, and focus on the single most important and urgent thing at every moment.
