Shilpacharya’s birth centenary celebration at Bokultola today

Today is the 102nd birth anniversary of internationally-acclaimed painter Zainul Abedin (December 29, 1914-2014), popularly known as Shilpacharya, the guru of art. He is the pioneer of the country’s modern art and founder of Charukola (Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University).

To celebrate his birth centenary in a befitting manner, like the previous years, a festival titled ‘Zainul Utsab’ has been arranged by the Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA) on the Bokultola premises of the Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), University of Dhaka (DU) today.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor is expected to be present as the chief guest at the festival, while Zahanar Abedin, wife of Zainul Abedin, will be present as special guest. The programme will be presided over by DU vice chancellor Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique.
A press release, issued by FFA Dean Professor Nesar Hossain, said, celebrated Indian artist Professor Jogen Chowdhury and noted artist Hashem Khan from Bangladesh will receive ‘Zainul Sammanana 2016’ at the festival this year.
Earlier in the morning, floral wreaths will be placed on the grave of Zainul Abedin adjacent to Dhaka University central mosque marking the 102nd birth anniversary of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin. After completing various types of formalities throughout the day, a cultural programme will be held at 5pm.
Besides, different socio-cultural organisations will also hold elaborate programmes in the capital as well as across the country.
Zainul Abedin (December 29, 1914 – May 28, 1976) was a Bangladeshi painter. He got the breakthrough in 1944 with his Famine Series paintings of 1943. After partition he moved to Pakistan; and finally, when Bangladesh was created in 1971, he was rightly considered the founding father of Bangladeshi art. He was an artist of exceptional talent and international repute. Like many of his contemporaries, his paintings on the Bengal famine of the 1940s are probably his most characteristic work. In Bangladesh, he is referred with honour as Shilpacharya (Great Teacher of the Arts) in Bangladesh for his artistic and visionary qualities.
