Cold wave likely in early January

The year 2016 may end its run without much shiver, but the new year is likely to begin with a bone-chilling cold wave, courtesy the sub-continental high pressure zone that was created yesterday at the border with West Bengal in India and is about to enter Bangladesh early January.
A bit of rain over Nilphamari’s Dimla and north-western Thakurgaon district on Monday elbowed out the westerly low pressure, making room for the high to move over to West Bengal.
“We are also expecting some more push from the westerly disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir in India to provide further muscle to the high pressure zone to settle over Bangladesh, bringing the overdue cold," senior meteorologist Abdul Mannan explained yesterday.
The small showers cooled the weather, making it too much for an elderly man in Dimla who died of cold-related complications, reports said. As the high pressure zone advanced from the south-east of India’s Uttar Pradesh towards western Bangladesh, its effects were felt in the country with a fall of 1-3 degrees Celsius in temperature since early yesterday.
Mannan attributed this to the blowing of cool air from the north-western fringe of the Himalayas. But it would not last long and rise a little after two days. Then the cooling would start from January 5, making the beginning of the new year cool and allowing the cold wave to take over, the meteorologist added.
