Bangladesh national women’s football team will take on Afghanistan in their opening match of the SAFF Women Football Championship today while the fourth edition of the regional competition has already been kicked off from December 26 in Shiliguri, India.
Bangladesh, who were drawn in Group B along with the reigning and three times champions India, will play their last group match on December 31 against the host.
Bangladesh women’s team, who won the runners-up trophy for twice and were eliminated from the semifinal stage out of last three editions, this time want to go ahead step by step with making a winning start. Meanwhile, a 26-member squad including six officials has already reached Shiliguri on December 26 with Sabina Khatun has been made new the team captain.
Team coach Golam Rabbani Choton, before leaving for India informed the reporters in a press conference on December 25 that their preliminary target to play in the semifinal.
Chotton, under whom Bangladesh won the SAFF Under-16 title and moved into the Asian final round said, “We are in the strong group along with defending champions and also the all last three times winners India and Afghanistan, who are also a strong side.” “We want to make a winning start with Afghanistan to qualify in the semifinal then we will try to progress match by match.” Sabina Khatun, captain of the team, who also addressed in the press conference before departing Dhaka, said, “We have the team comprising with young and experienced, hopefully we will do well, we always try to give our 100 percent in the field.”
Sabina, who was concern about the chilly condition of Shiliguri said, “Right now the condition is very cold, we played in the same condition previous and going three days before to begin our campaign, hopefully we would be able to adjust.”
Chotton also informed that he started the camp with 37 booters where from they reduced it to 34 and made the 20-member final selection.
