JU Teachers' Association polls today
SAVAR:  The election to the executive committee of Jahangirnagar University Teachers' Association (JUTA) for the year 2017 will be held today (Thursday) at JU Teachers' Club. 
The voting will be held between 9 am and 1.30 pm while 535 teachers will cast their votes to elect the committee. 
The election commissioner professor of Urban and Regional Planning department AKM Abul Kalam told The Independent yesterday.  A total 15 executive members will be elected while the contestants are in two panels. They are- Awami League-backed panel known as 'Bangabandhur Adarsha o Muktijuddher Chetanay Biswasi Pragatisil Shikkhak Samaj' and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-backed panel known as 'Bahudaliya Ganatantra, Shwadhinata O Sarbavaumattya o Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Biswashi Shikkhak'.  Professor of Physics Department Farid Ahmed and Associate Professor of Philosophy department Farid Ahmed will contest as president and general secretary respectively from the AL backed fraction. On the other hand, Professor of Government and Politics department Md Shamsul Alam and Associate Professor of Environmental Science department Jamal Uddin will contest as president and general secretary respectively from the BNP backed panel. Mentionable, no left leaning teachers’ panel will participate in the election this year. 

3-day winter fest begins at JU
SAVAR: A three-day ‘Winter Festival’ began at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Tuesday. 
With the slogan ‘Kuashar Rang Makhi Himdesh Uthane’ on the banner of ‘Amra Parampara’ the students of different cultural and social organisations has arranged this winter festival on campus.  
Vice Chancellor Dr arzana Islam has visited the festival premises at university’s photography yard behind the Zahir Raihan Auditorium yesterday. The festival includes street theatre, daylong photography and painting exhibition, poetry competition, folk song, art camp, narrative opera and captivating concert dedicated to the prominent band singer Ajam Khan. 

CUB holds seminar on human rights 
The School of Law, Canadian University of Bangladesh (CUB) organised a seminar on ‘Human Rights: Can the UN Help?’ on the occasion of World Human Rights Day, says a press release.
Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat, founder and chairman, Canadian University of Bangladesh, conferred vote of thanks in the event. Dr Syed Sharfaraj Hamid, associate professor and head, School of Law, conducted the seminar.    
Dr Uttam Kumar Das, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh and Programme Director, Social Dialogue & Industrial Relations (ILO), Barrister Jennifer Ashraf, Senior Consultant (Legal Expert) of World Bank and Ministry of Environment, Bangladesh, Rowshon Ara, Project Director (Naripokkho), Strengthening of State and Community Initiatives for the Prevention and Reduction of Violence Against Women Project and Barrister M Kamruzzaman Shadhin, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh were the speaker of the seminar. Pro James Gomez, Pro-Vice Chancellor, was also present on the occasion.
