It is very encouraging to know that the government is going to pass law for protecting agricultural land. The Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said about this in the capital recently, according to a report published in this newspaper. In the wake of dwindling arable land across the country, such a law would be more than welcome. The hard reality is that with every passing year Bangladesh, which has already been overburdened with population, is witnessing growing population but its land resources are not increasing.
Far from it, in actuality, due to unplanned growth of housing sector and industries, the very precious agricultural land volume of the country is gradually decreasing. This is ominous. If the present trend of misuse of agricultural land continues, Bangladesh may face a tough challenge to feed its growing population in the future. The point is wastage of land has to be protected.
Not only is it necessary to enact law to protect corps-growing fields, it is equally important to stop the horizontal expansion of cities. As growing population will also increase demand for housing, cities should go for the mandatory vertical development. Gone are the days of having the luxury of a single or double-storied building for living. Even richer countries of the world that have ironically greater land resources are going for vertical expansion of their cities.
Therefore, we cannot opt to become foolish by not stopping the trend of horizontal expansion of our cities. For protecting our scarce land resources, it is equally important to create industrial zones across the country and for giving permission to newer industries; the government should follow stricter rules in this regard. Haphazard expansion of industries also has to be stopped. Now it is our expectation that the government would not take more time and go for taking necessary steps to enact law for protection of the country’s agricultural land taking seriously the set of recommendations by the Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) which presented it before the words of Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain a few days ago.
Besides protection of the agricultural land, the government must also take initiative to make proper use of the fallow land which can be converted for use of industrial or housing purposes. There is also the crucial need of reclaiming the land of government—the land of railway for example—which is being used by the vested people. The bottom line is: the country should always make judicious use of its existing land, because we cannot afford to waste it.
