Ershad wants quotas for minorities

UNB

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Monday said his party will introduce quotas for minorities in parliament, public services and higher education if it returns to power, reports UNB. “I want to introduce quotas for minorities in parliament, public services and higher education. If you (Christian community) stand by us, Jatiya Party will come to power again,” he said. Ershad, a former military ruler, came up with the remark while addressing a views-exchange meeting with Christian community leaders at the Jatiya Party chairman’s Banani office on the occasion of Christmas Day, marking the birth of Jesus Christ.
The Jatiya Party chief together with the members of Christian community cut a Christmas cake and exchanged greetings with them.  Ershad said it is a matter of proud that a Bangladeshi Archbishop was made a cardinal for the first time. “I’m the only and the first President who met Pope in the Vatican.”  He announced to form a Welfare Trust for the Christian community if his party is voted to power.
Ershad said no community was looked down upon as minority and no one was treated with discrimination when his party was in power.
Ershad, also the special envoy to the Prime Minister, bemoaned that minority community members are now facing various forms of oppression while the priests and innocent Christian community members are getting killed. “People have now no security. This situation needs to be changed and Jatiya Party can do it if it’s voted to power,” he observed.  Ershad also called upon all irrespective of their party, opinion and religion to rally around his party and make it stronger one.  Jatiya Party co-chairman GM Quader, its general secretary ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader and presidium member Shunil Shovo Roy, and Christian community leaders David Gomes and Prius Gomes were, among others, present at the meeting.
