A parliamentary watchdog yesterday recommended taking steps to modernise the Cipher Directorate under the Defence Ministry, reports UNB. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence Ministry came up with the recommendation at its 23rd meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with its chairman Shubid Ali Bhuiyan in the chair. The meeting asked the authorities concerned to bring the staff of the directorate, including machine operators, proofreaders, draftsmen and cutters, in a structure to operate and maintain machines effectively. It suggested forming an ICT cell involving system analysts, programmers and data entry operators to develop crypto software and conduct research. The committee stressed the need for acquiring practical knowledge and field level experience on cipher communication at local and international levels. It also recommended introducing food rationing system for lower-grade staff of the Cipher Directorate to help them improve their livelihood.Committee members Mohammad Faruk Khan, Mahmud Us Samad and Hosne Ara Begum and senior officials of Army, Navy and Air Force attended the meeting.
