Bangladesh progressed to the final when they flayed Maldives by straight 3-0 sets in the exciting match of the Bangabandhu Asian Men’s Senior Central Zone Volleyball Championship at the Shaheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium in the capital yesterday.
Now they will face-off high-ranked Kyrgyzstan, who earlier beat the former by 3-2 sets on Sunday, in the final at the same venue at 3:00pm today following the third-place deciding match between Maldives and Nepal at 1:00pm.
Any match of the tournament has not rolled onto 30-pointed set before Bangladesh and Maldives match, where the former won the first set of the exciting match by 30-28 points. At one stage, two sides fought hard and the set evolved by neck-to-neck fight such as 23-23, 24-24, 25-25, 26-26, 27-27 and 28-28. Finally the hosts gripped the control by claiming two needed points.
Bangladesh won the second set by 25-16 points. Maldives desperately tried to come back in the third set after 20 points as both team started moving at the same pace with 21-21, 22-22, 23-23, 24-24, 25-25 and 26-26. Finally the home side triumphed the third and last set by 28-26 points. Harshit Biswas of Bangladesh was adjudged player of the match.
In day’s other match, Kyrgyzstan cantered to an emphatic victory of 3-1 sets over Nepal. The high-ranked team of the tournament claimed four off four-match outings and cruised into the final with the highest number of 11 points.
