Wildlife researchers have expressed concerns over the high death rate of wild animals at Lawachhara National Park caused by various reasons, including the movement of locomotives on rail tracks and speedy vehicles on roads in and around the forest. According to a report in this newspaper yesterday, wild animals like fox, fishing cat, wildcat, monkey, deer, frog, and rare species of snakes are often run over and killed by vehicles on the road. This is not only occurring in Lawachhara forest but also other forests of the country.
According to the primary findings of a research team of Jagannath University, 40 animals were crushed on roads and rail tracks inside the forest over three months since September last. The researchers also mentioned that at least 10 barking deer of the forest were caught by locals as those animals had strayed into the human habitations over the same period. Wild animals are victims of human cruelty for no fault of their own. They face scarcity of food; so they come to human settlements in search of food and fall victims to human cruelty. Poaching of wild animals is going on unabatedly. If this mindless killing goes on, wild animals will face extinction in the near future.
Wild animals are also endangered due to the threat to bio-diversity stemming from denudation of the forests, looting of forest resources rampantly by bandits in connivance with a section of dishonest forest department officials and members of law enforcing agencies.
According to global environment experts, the accepted standard is that a country must have at least 25 per cent of its total land area covered with forests to maintain the ecological balance but our country has now 13. 2 per cent forest coverage, but the environmentalists said it is an inflated figure as the real forest coverage will not be more than 7-9 per cent. The importance of wild animals of a country is immense for maintaining the balance of nature, environment, ecology and biodiversity.
Killing of wild animals must be stopped at any cost. Vigilance of the members of the law enforcement agencies must be intensified to stop poaching of wild animals. Mass awareness should also be created for the protection of wild animals. The government should take necessary measure to augment afforestation in the country. NGOs and voluntary organizations can supplement the government efforts in this regard.
