UN resolution on Israeli settlements

Despite the fierce critic of the veto, we believe the US president elect-Donald Trump, too, would usher in a new era in terms of defining a more sensible and lawful UN’s relationship with Israel
UN resolution on Israeli settlements

At long last, the UN Security Council has voted in favour of the landmark resolution demanding cease of all Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian territory with the United States curiously abstaining from voting last Friday. Very much in tuned with the Palestinian negotiator , we also believe, it was a day of victory for international law, a victory for civilised language and negotiation while being a total rejection of extremist forces in Israel.
The resolution was adopted with 14 votes with a resounding round of applause. Additionally, it was also the first resolution the Security Council has adopted on Israel and the Palestinians in nearly eight years.
However, it was Israel’s offensive way of response which appeared uncalled-for to many including us. Rather brusquely, Israel had summoned the ambassadors of UN Security Council member states that voted in favour of the resolution condemning its age-long settlement sites. Such audacious response shown to UN Security Council states’ collective opinion clearly hints at Israelis utter defiance to the outcome of the voting. Moreover, the resolution being approved in absentia of the US also merits the question - why did US abstain from voting when the outcome will be anyhow determined by the US leadership? Rather unusually, apart from the 14 envoys, the US envoy was not summoned. The sudden shift of US’s policy towards Israel might have appeared as a big shock to Jewish establishments, but it’s time to resolve the settlement dispute that has often riddled the Middle East with unexpected violence and destruction of properties.
Despite the fierce critic of the veto, we believe the US president elect-Donald Trump, too, would usher in a new era in terms of defining a more sensible and lawful UN’s relationship with Israel.
Illegal Israeli settlements are often considered as a major stumbling block to peace efforts since much of it is built deep inside Palestinian territory - being a part of their future state.
Nevertheless, bills and resolutions may get approved or not, but we expect this watershed resolution to be implemented in the future days to come. Not as an act of anti-Semitic hostility, on the contrary, it should serve as a victory of international law while being taken seriously by cabinets binding the International Criminal Courts.
