As the team’s run of success in the one-day international cricket is at stake, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon met the players to motivate them ahead of the second match against South Africa.
The president had a meeting with the players as well as the five-member technical committee comprised with Mainul Haque Mainu, Ishtiaque Ahmed, ASM Faruque, Shafiqul Haque Heera and Athar Ali Khan.
Since the introduction of the committee, it is the first time the president sat with them. Among the five members, only ASM Faruque was absent. The meeting is believed to be held after Bangladesh’s confidence to win against South Africa looked completely down.
The president firstly met the technical committee to know their recommendation about the team.
“They said the team is playing good cricket and they could turn the things around. They are even hopeful that Bangladesh could win the second match,” Nazmul Hassan Papon told the reporters yesterday.
“They recommended some changes in some places which I conveyed to the coach, selectors, captain and the manager,” he added.
The president however had to face a volley of questions on whether technical committee’s recommendation is a direct conflict of interest with the selection panel or team management.
Papon trashed any conflict of interest, stating, “They have just made their recommendation to me when I asked them. I conveyed it to the concerned people and they will do the rest.”
Having said that he also disclosed that they have already finalised the name of 10 members for the second ODI and there is only one is up for grab for which they are yet to decide.
“I talked to all concerned people regarding the team combination for the second match as it would be a do or die match for us. We’ve already finalised the team combination. Ten members are sure while we are not sure about one member. There will be another round of discussion with one spot after which we’ll decide who will be the No 11 member of the team.”
Shafiqul Haque Heera, one of the members of the technical committee, said they recommended of bringing up changes in three places—Rubel Hossain in place of Sabbir Rahman, Arafat Sunny in Jubair Hossain Likhon’s place and Anamul Haque Bijoy in place of Litton Das.
While the president revealed that they have already finalised the name of the 10 members, it looked that they are in dilemma with the place of Jubair Hossain Likhon with whom the selectors and the team management is at loggerheads.
After the meeting with the technical committee the president discussed with the players and the team managements to find out the reason behind their sudden collapse from the graceful position.
“Actually I want to meet them at hotel but since they were here for practice, I decided to meet them on the ground. I also called up the technical members. The reason was to motivate the players ahead of the second match and to find out the reason as to why we go down from the good position.”
Bangladesh were flying high after comprehensively beating sub-continent giants Pakistan and India following a blockbuster World Cup outing. The rot began with the defeat against India in the last match in which they showed a mediocre batting performance. The dismal batting continued against South Africa too and they lost three matches at a stretch, including being whitewashed by 2-0 in the Twenty20 series.
“What the players said that the South Africa is too professional unlike the India and Pakistan. But it’s not that we can’t beat them. Our bowling was up to mark so even the South African batsmen had to pay a due respect.
It’s not that their batsmen took our bowlers in utter derision, so there is no reason to be worried.”
“Their professionalism is evidenced in their strategy. They studied our bowlers and batsmen very well and stuck to the basics. Our batsmen told me that they hardly got any loose deliveries in the three matches they played. It meant they knew well about our weakness.”
“What went against us was our batting. I even asked Mushfiqur why he played such shot when there is a partnership in the making. That was a cordial discussion indeed and we discussed what we should do to regain our form.”
The president also disclosed that they would sell the ticket through online in order erase the people’s sufferings. The people had long complained of not getting tickets at designated banks since the BCB provided at least 40 percent complimentary tickets.
“After we take over, the number of complimentary ticket is reduced and all has to pay for the tickets. For political purpose no tickets are given and even we don’t give any free tickets to our MPs. However in future we’ll sell the tickets through online to erase the people’s sufferings.”
