Borobari-Burimari highway

Potholes, cracks pose risks to traffic

Our correspondent, Lalmonirhat

About 105-kilometre-long Borobari-Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway is in  vulnerable condition due to numerous cracks and potholes causing problem in vehicular movement.
Several potholes and cracks have developed all over the road from Lalmonirhat to Burimari. It is the only road that connects five upazilas of the district, the Burimari land port and the immigration point.
Everyday thousands of passengers and tourists leaving for India, Bhutan and Nepal pass through this land port. Hundreds of goods laden trucks and busses ply on the road from Burimari to other parts of the country. More than fifty coaches arrive and depart from Burimari to Dhaka every night carrying international and local passengers. But, in recent times the road has become vulnerable and risky for the movement of vehicles.
Once, several goods-laden trucks from India and Bhutan used to ply through the Teesta Barrage project. Ten-wheeler trucks with stones also ply through the barrage. But, since last year there has been ban on movement of heavy vehicles on the barrage.
Following the restriction the pressure on the road has mounted. The road was constructed for the movement of light vehicles. But it is being used by heavy vehicles defying the regulation.
There are several risky turnings on the road from Burimari to Lalmonirhat. Besides, the road crosses the Lalmonirhat-Burimari rail track at seven points, which is abnormal. Drivers of the bus and trucks feel very shaky while driving on the road that has seen many fatal accidents.
Ismail Hosen, a driver of a Dhaka-bound night coach, said the road is now unfit for the movement of long route vehicles. “We face difficulty and mental pressure while driving at  night,” he said.
Burimari is one of the most significant places in view of its immigration and commercial importance to the importers. As Burimari can play a significant role in boosting the trade and connectivity with three neighboring countries -- India, Bhutan, Nepal -- the reconstruction of the road is very much important. Monowar Hosen,an engineer with the Roads and Highways Department, Lalmonirhat said the vehicles carrying stones are causing damage to the roads.
As the movement of heavy vehicles over Teesta barrage suspended all the goods-laden trucks are now using the road putting additional pressure on it. A project involving Tk 20 crores has been taken up for the development of 52-kilometre road. The work from Patgram has already started and it will continue after the rainy season.
