Normal life of the people in Narail, Noakhali and Jhenidah districts has been seriously hampered due to incessant rain over the past four days.
Our Narail correspondent reports: Narail town and its surrounding low lying areas have been inundated due to heavy downpour since Wednesday morning.
Most of the roads in Narail town, vegetable farms, crop fields and market places have gone under water.
The suffering of the destitute and slum dwellers knows no bounds. The working class people living from hand to mouth are the worst sufferers of the incessant rain. Though the jute cultivators are happy, the owners of the fish farms have been much disappointed because some of the fish enclosures in this area have already been washed away causing great financial losses.
The continuous rain has also dampened the mood of Eid shoppers, especially the children. Parimal Dey, owner of Nilanjana Garments at Rupganj Bazaar said customers were supposed to be crowding the shops ahead of the Eid; but it is not happening due to incessant rain. Vegetable growers are also frustrated.
Abdul Mannan Mia, a vegetable grower of Dhuria village under Sadar upazila, said his vegetable farm has been inundated causing a great economic loss to my family. The vegetable will be dearer due to short supply, he forecasts.
Kazi Hafiz, 55, a resident in Narail town, said one of the main causes of inundation of the town is filling up of the water bodies of the town and unplanned drainage system.
Our Noakhali correspondent adds: The torrential rain that started on Tuesday was continuing yesterday affecting the normal life of people in Noakhali district.
Standing Aus paddy on a large tract of land has gone under water in Sadar and Subarnachar upazilas causing losses to many farmers.
Sadar upazila Agricultural officer Shahidul Islam said the rain and onrush of water from upstream have damaged standing Aus crops as 400 to 450 acres of land.
Vegetable and fish farms have been washed away by torrents of rain water and tidal surge from the Meghna River.
Our Jhenidah correspondent adds: Nearly 70 villages in Moheshpur upazila of Jhenidah have been cut-off from the district headquarters due to heavy rains over the past four days. Crops on at least 4,000 hectares of land have been destroyed in the area.
Thousands of families living in those villages have been marooned after flood water inundated their homesteads. According to sources, the roads are now under water. Only rafts are the only means of communication in the villages.
Chairman of Sharuppur union parishad Zulfikar Ali said a large amount of Aman, Aush and vegetables has gone under the water. Most crops will be destroyed if the water does not recede immediately.
Chairman of Pantapara village Ismile Hossain said most roads have been damaged by the flood water.
Assistant agriculture officer of Moheshpur upazila Shamim Khan said Aman seed bed on 680 ha, Aush paddy on 3,780 ha, varities of vegetables on 350 ha and green chili on 85 ha of land have been fully damaged by the heavy rain.
