Seven Biman officials remanded
Glitch in PM flight
In connection with the case filed over the much talked about technical mishaps in Prime Ministers Sheikh Hasinas flight, a Dhaka court yesterday placed seven Biman Bangladesh Airlines officials on seven-day remand.
Earlier, Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police arrested the seven Biman officials -- Debesh Chowdhury, chief engineer (production), SA Siddique, chief engineer (quality assurance), Billal Hossain, principal engineer, Samiul Haque, Lutfor Rahman, Milon Chandra Biswas and Zakir Hossain.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (media and public relations) Masudur Rahman said a team of DMPs CTTC unit arrested them from different areas of the city on Wednesday night. Investigation officer Mahbub Alam of CTTC produced the arrestees before the court yesterday and sought 10-day remand for each. Magistrate Snigdha Rani Chakrabari later placed the Biman officials on 7-day remand each.
Meanwhile two other Biman officials, SM Rokonuzzaman and Siddiqur Rahman, who were absconding
surrendered before a local court yesterday afternoon and were sent to jail following their pleas for bail.
On Tuesday night, Director (Engineering and Management) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines MM Asaduzzaman filed a case
against nine officials of the national flag carrier with Airport Police Station under the Special Powers Act. Later, the DMP headquarters issued an order on Wednesday to transfer the case to the CTTC unit from Airport Police Station.
A Biman flight carrying the Prime Minister had to make an emergency landing at Ashgabat International Airport in Turkmenistan on her way to Budapest on November 27 following low oil pressure in its engine.
Three inquiry committees one by the civil aviation ministry, one by Biman and another by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, were formed following the incident.
A total of nine officials, including three engineers of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, were suspended for their negligence of duty in this connection.
All of the committees concluded that the Boeing 777-300ER carrying the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to land at Ashgabat International Airport in Turkmenistan because of the oil leakage caused by a loose nut in the plane and the incident was manmade.
