Bangladesh were off to good start in the Bangabandhu Asian Senior Men’s Central Zone Volleyball championship beating Afghanistan by 3-1 sets in the opening match at Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in the capital yesterday.
Bangladesh spikers had to face moderate resistance from the Afghans and on many occasions it seemed that the well built Afghans would dominate the affairs after drawing level in the second set. But a determined Bangladesh led by their captain Al-Zabed gradually snatched the domination and won the battle 25-15. 18-25. 25-16. 25-19. Later Zabed was adjudged the players of the match. Bangladesh will play their second match with Nepal today at 4 pm in this five-nation tournament. Maldives and Kyrgyzstan are the other two participating teams.
Earlier, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed inaugurated the six day tournament as chief guest. Bangladesh Volleyball Federation president Md Atiqul Islam presided over the opening ceremony.
