Mejbah Ahmed maintained her supremacy clinching the 100 meters sprint title in the Joyjatra foundation 40th National Athletics yesterday to retain the fastest man title of Bangladesh for three times in a row.
Held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Mejbah won the gold finishing the touch line with 10:63 second leaving behind his Bangladesh Naval compatriot Abdur Rouf finished on 10:70 followed by Shariful Islam of Bangladesh Army who took 10:77seconds.
It was hat-trick title for Mejbah in national meet and fifth time at national level, when he won the gold in Bangladesh Games and Summer Athletics.
Mejbah, the Rio Olympian, was on threat to retain his title as his compatriot Rouf and Shariful of Army ran very closely to him while both the silver medalist and other challengers were running parallel to him up to 85 meters. Mejbah also agreed in his reaction after the discipline when he said, “I had to face huge struggle this time because Army, Air Force and BJMC compatriot competed well, they ran faster than previous time.”
Mejbah, who has high hope to taste the SA Games gold in 2018, said, “Actually, there is no option but to practice for long time and to build up for any international meet.”
“You see, Sri Lankan and other athletes have the opportunity to train in Australia and some others in America of our SAFF region, but we have not. So to earn something more from international arena, there is no way but to have high performance training,” said Mejbah.
Mejbah, who was a little bit behind to his compatriot Rouf and Army man Shariful up to 85 meters, said about the technique of recovering – “In the last 15 meters I geared up my speed just following the technique of Usain Bolt.”
Mejbah ran in the Rio Olympic with 11:34 second (electronic time) while his previous timing in the 39th National Championship was 10:60 (hand timing). Mejbah did his best timing in the electronic timing 10:99 in the Asian Athletics meet in 2013.
But Army athletes did their best in other events to lead first day medal table when they won four gold medals, as many silver and three bronze medals after the end of six events on the first day.
The day started with 20 meters walking when Mohammed Raju opened the account for Army taking 1:39:30.00 seconds to lift the gold followed by his compatriot Shimi Akhter who won the gold medal in the women’s 1500 meter run while Mojubur Rahman and Jesmin Akhter were the two other gold medal winners for Army.
Mojibur Rahman won the gold of 110 meters men’s hurdles (14:21) and Jesmin Akhter (14:80) won women’s 100 meters hurdle.
Meanwhile, Khondokar Kibria of Bangladesh Border Guard won the gold in the men’s 1500 meters race.
