Bangladesh eliminated from U/19 Asia Cup

Sports Reporter

Bangladesh made an exit to the Asia Cup Under-19 cricket tournament after they lost to hosts Sri Lanka in the rain-effected second semi-final match by 26 runs in D/L method at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday.

After opting to bat first, Bangladesh Under-19 team were shot out for 194 in 48.3 overs, which was below par total by any means. Sri Lanka reached 106 for two in 27.1 overs in reply and was set to win the match but rain halted the day-night game.
Sri Lanka needed 81 runs to win at that stage and as no further play was possible they won the match by 26 runs to reach the final.
Bangladesh got off to a decent start with openers made 42 runs in 8.3 overs but the blow came when pace bowler Jehan Daniel removed skipper Saif Hasan who scored a fluent 26 off 27.
After the departure of Saif, Sri Lanka youth stemmed the run flow of Bangladesh.  All six top-order batsmen though reached double figures none could make a half-century which resulted a lowly total. Afif Hossain contributed 36 for side but despite being set in the crease he couldn’t make the innings longer.
Rayan Rafsan Rahman, who made highest 38, made a 48-run sixth wicket stand with Mohammad Rakib (22) but after he departed as the fifth batsman on 166 in the 39th over Bangladesh lost their way.
A score around 250 was on the card given the progress of Bangladesh at this stage but they lost their last six wickets for just 28 runs to be bundled out for under 200-run mark.
Two Slow left-arm bowlers Pravin Jayawickrma and Hareen Weerasingha were the wrecker-in-chief, scalping four for 25 and three for 29 respectively. Sri Lanka were solid in their reply. Openers Reven Kelly (23) and Vishva Chathuranga shared 74 runs to make a good start which kept them in the favourable position to win the game in case of raining. Both the openers were removed by Bangladesh new-ball bowler Nayeem Hasan, who finished with an impressive figure of 7.1-1-12-2, but Chathuranga’s 68 off 77 with seven fours and a six was good enough to coast his side home.
