Yesterday was the sixth day of the Bangla month of Paush, which is usually associated with winter chill and the northerly winds. But this year, the chill is conspicuous by its absence. The fog has delayed the sunrise as late as after 8am. Throughout the day there is an absence of strong sunlight even though there is blazing sunlight occasionally.
Why is this happening?
At the beginning of December, the Meteorological Department—in its long-range forecast for the month—said the winter would arrive gradually after the middle of the month.
But Paush has arrived. People are now wondering why they are still feeling warm at midday. Even at night they have to keep their windows shut to fend off swarming mosquitoes with whirling fans.
Ruhul Kuddus, a meteorologist at the Dhaka Met office, told The Independent yesterday that the winter would come gradually.
An easterly low pressure from the South East China Sea up to Bangladesh has kept the ridge of the sub-continental high and prevented it from arriving over Bangladesh despite reaching the eastern Indian state of Bihar and adjoining West Bengal. This usually ushers in winter in this part of the world.
