President Abdul Hamid yesterday hoped that a guideline will come out through the opinions of political parties over the formation of a strong Election Commission (EC), reports UNB. The President made the remarks during a discussion with an 18-member Jatiya Party (JaPa) delegation, led by its chairman HM Ershad, at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban. Abdul Hamid said the discussion has created a scope to exchange views with the political parties, which is very important. President's press secretary Joynal Abedin briefed reporters after the meeting. During the 80-minute meeting, Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad presented a five-point proposal to reconstitute the Commission. Ershad, also a PM’s Adviser, explained the party’s logic to formulate a law regarding the EC formation.
Thanking the President for initiating the dialogue, the JaPa chief said the nation has developed a confidence in the President. “Jatiya Party believes in dialogue, not in any conflict,” Joynal Abedin said quoting the JaPa chairman as saying. President Hamid hoped the Jatiya Party’s proposals will play a positive role in forming of the next EC.
He sought the cooperation of all political parties in forming the new EC. The other delegation members are Raushan Ershad, GM Quader, Ruhul Amin Howlader, Anisul Islam Mahmud, MA Sattar, Kazi Firoz Rashid, Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, Syed Abu Hossain Babla, Fakhrul Imam, Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Salma Islam, Delwar Hossain, SM Faisal Chisty, ATU Taj Rahman, Moshiur Rahman Ranga, Tajul Islam Chowdhury and Khaled Akhter. Secretaries concerned to the President Office were present.
President Hamid initiated the formal talks with political parties about the EC formation with holding discussions with BNP on Sunday.
