The British Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy for Bangladesh Rushanara Ali MP, assured the businessmen of Bangladesh that the Brexit would not hamper the trade relations between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom, reports BSS.
“The friendship between Bangladesh and UK has developed a lot over the recent years. I am delighted seeing the pace of development activities in Bangladesh,” she said during a meeting with a delegation of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) led by its President Abdul Matlub Ahmad at a hotel yesterday.
During the meeting, Ali also showed her keen desire to work with Bangladesh on the climate change issues. Besides, they discussed various bilateral issues including trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
FBCCI President Matlub Ahmad underscored the need for transferring UK technology to Bangladesh for developing the country’s economy and sought UK investment in the power and energy sectors.
He also urged the British MP to facilitate more Bangladeshi students in the UK universities.
Alison Blake, High Commis-sioner of UK to Bangladesh, also spoke in the meeting. She mentioned that UK has launched online visa processing for Bangladesh visitors.
It may be mentioned that UK is the 3rd single largest destination for Bangladesh’s exports, after the United States and Germany. Over the years Bangladesh’s exports to the UK enjoys a steady annual growth. In 2015-16 Bangladesh’s export to UK was of US$ 3.81 billion and the import was $ 0.28 billion.
Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin), first vice president of FBCCI, informed the meeting that Bangladesh has been working to develop the labour standard, and has eliminated child labour from the industries.
