Writ seeks stay on N’ganj dist council polls

A writ petition was filed with the High Court yesterday seeking a stay on the Narayanganj District Council (Zila Parishad) election slated for December 28 over ‘faulty voter list’.
Advocate Eunus Ali Akond filed the petition with the related branch of the High Court on behalf of Md Shahjalal, a resident of Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj. The petition also sought a stay on the effectiveness of the voter list meant for the district council elections.
After filing the petition, Eunus Ali Akond told reporters that the present mayor and councilors of Narayanganj City Corporation have been enlisted in the voter list that was published on November 27. As per the provision, any voter enlisted after November 27 cannot cast votes in the district council elections, he added.
The tenure of the mayor and councilors, currently enlisted as voters, will end on Dec 27.
