Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), a banned militant outfit and an offshoot of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), has become active again and is trying to reorganise itself, Md Shafiqul Islam, deputy inspector of general of police (DIG), Chittagong range, said yesterday in the divisional law enforcement meeting at Chittagong. Police suspect that the JMJB militants have gone into hiding after coming out of prison. The police are also looking for the accused who carried out bomb blasts within 30 minutes of each other in 63 out of 64 districts in 2005.
“The old JMB has become active again. Most of the militants are out of jail. But we don’t know about their whereabouts,” Shafiqul Islam said.
“We have given this outfit a name. We have called it the new JMB. After the attack on Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka, the old JMB, which was the follower of Bangla Bhai (Siddique ul-Islam), has become active again. We are keeping an eye on their activities,” he added.
Giving an example, he said, “Suppose a militant, who is a resident of Chittagong, committed crime in Jenaidah. So, he was sentenced in Jenaidah. But after completing his sentence, he did not return to Chittagong. We have no information about the whereabouts of such militants. And they have started militant activities again. We are looking for these militants and have stepped up vigilance,” Shafiqul Islam added. He, however, said the police alone cannot resist militancy and needs the support of all to deal with them.
Speaking to The Independent over the telephone, he said: “Most of the JMB members who carried out bomb blasts in 63 districts are out of jail. We have launched a hunt for the militants who were named in the charge-sheet in the bomb blasts case.”
Referring to the incidents in Brahmanbria’s Nasirnagar, he said permission was given to different Islamic parties. However, the DC was not aware of it. The upazila nirbahi officer and the officer-in-charge gave permissions for the meeting. It was because of their “inefficiency”, he claimed.
Divisional commissioner Ruhul Amin presided over the meeting. DIG (Chittagong range) Md Shafiqul Islam, Coast Guard East Zone commander Shaidul Islam, additional divisional commissioner Shankar Ranjan Shah and deputy commissioners from 11 districts were present at the meeting.
