Shah Alam, 45, a Rohingya Muslim of Mangala village in the Rakhine state of Myanmar, managed to flee from Myanmar after he was shot by the army and left for dead. He entered Bangladesh territory, but could not escape death due to his bullet wound. Alam was picked up by Myanmar army personnel from his house on Sunday evening and shot on the left chest. The wounded Alam entered this country through the Jadimura ghat of Myanmar and Damoddia ghat of Bangladesh yesterday morning. However, he succumbed to his bullet wound at the Leda Rohingya
refugee camp of Teknaf at 9am. Fatema Khatun, Alam’s sister, said troops picked up her brother from their house and later he was found nearby with a bullet wound.
They crossed over to Bangladesh yesterday morning as the military told them to leave Myanmar. They reached the Leda camp at 8am and her brother died an hour later.
On November 26, 2016 a six-month-old Rohingya baby, Jane Alam, died shortly after its mother managed to enter Bangladesh.
The Boarder Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) sent back 28 Rohingyas and a boat carrying 10 to 12 Rohingyas trying to sneak into Bangladesh yesterday, said sources in the BGB’s Teknaf Battalion (II).
Following an attack on a border outpost of Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) on October 9, Myanmar’s military started a crackdown. As a result, the Rohingyas started fleeing to Bangladesh. They are entering this country almost every day, seeking a safe haven. Most of them have reportedly lost young male members of their families, while young girls were often victims of rape.
The United Nations said at least 27,000 Rohingyas have entered Bangladesh following the cleansing operation in that country.
Amnesty International said the treatment being meted out to Rohingya Muslims by the Myanmar army may constitute a crime against humanity.
