Customs official arrested a man along with 42 gold bars weighing around 4.870 kg from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on Sunday night, reports UNB.
The arrestee was identified as Jahirul Islam.
Sources said a team of customs officials challenged Jahirul, who came to Dhaka from Dubai by a flight of Emirates Airways, around 10.50 pm. Later, the team recovered the gold bars worth TK 2.4 crore from his luggage.
Staff reporter adds from Chittagong: Customs officials on Sunday afternoon seized 573 cartons of foreign cigarettes worth Tk 13 crore at Chittagong Port which was imported under miss declaration. Chittagong Customs House joint-commissioner Md Rois Uddin said Kadena Sportswear of Comilla EPZ imported the cigarettes from Singapore giving declaration of accessories.
On suspicion, Customs officials seized the consignment on December 14 and found 573 cartons containing 1.07 crore sticks of different foreign brand cigarettes including Dunhill and Benson and Hedges while examined it on Sunday afternoon, said Rois Uddin.
