GAZIPUR: President Abdul Hamid yesterday underscored the need for putting joint efforts to ensure quality of education so that the students of the country can survive with their quality in both local and international competition, reports UNB.
"We will have to keep in mind that passing in the examinations and get educated are not same.
The main purpose of education is to flourish talents of students apart from giving knowledge," he said this while addressing the 5th convocation of Bangladesh Open University (BOU), the only public university for distance learning in the country, on its campus here.
The President said, "So, we will have to give importance to quality education apart from increasing the rate of education. We have to ensure together so that our students can survive with their quality in both local and international competition." A total of 5010 students received degrees at the convocation.
The purpose of higher education is not only to pursue a degree and good earnings rather to become a complete ideal human being where qualities, including ethics and patriotism, will be reflected, said the president, also the chancellor of the university.
"We have to build our universities as centre of practicing knowledge.
I believe the country's universities will turn those as complete centre of practicing knowledge and research being responsible to the country and the nation," President Hamid said.
In today's world Open and Distance Learning have unveiled new horizon in acquiring knowledge, he said adding Open Education has been accepted across the world using various system and technology to teach students.
"There is beginning of education but no end. It can be acquired throughout the life. Bangladesh Open University has initiated a new chapter in education system by providing scope to the students who were deprived of education for various reasons," the President added.
He hoped that the graduates of the university will be considered as role model to all through their honesty, patriotism and non-communal liberal attitude imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War.
